Abstract: The following essay will give you an insight into the subject from the Gravestone of
Catharina Gottschalck. It is made as a first step in the process of preservation and
restoration related to the object. Indispensable for the curatorial treatment of the
sandstone is to know the damages and the causes.
A historical background could be made according to the work at the archive. The written
part of this essay is complemented with cartography and pictures of the object and its
details. Catharina Gottschalck was living in the 14th century. She belonged to the
patrician of Eisenach. Her husband was the mayor of Eisenach in these days.
The monuments place today is the south‐side of the former Predigerkirche in Eisenach. It
was built into the wall.
The figurative representation which is shown in the iconographic program are at the top
Jesus Christ, below him are St. John, one of his disciples, and the two Marys. The
program also includes some attributes like angels and two lions with one head.
The huge damage at the monument gives testimony to the urgency of carrying out some
measures.
